Angels Do Walk Among Us
Angels Do Walk Among Us
A little over a week ago a blinding white-out triggered a massive 50 vehicle pile-up on the Interstate near here. One man is happy to be alive.
Ron Hall hung on for dear life after losing control on the icy bridge when his semi tractor trailer rig was slammed by another semi.
Seconds later, Ron, still inside the cab, looked out the window to discover he was dangling over the guardrail, suspended 200 feet above Wintergreen Gorge. A that moment he thought his life was over. He thought wrong.
In disbelief, Ron watched as a man climbed up onto the top of the snow- covered guardrail and moved toward the cab. He made his way along, balancing carefully, like a circus performer in a highwire act.
The man reached the cab and climbed up on the hood. A bystander threw a hammer up to the man who proceeded to beat the windshield with it. Despite the obvious danger and gentle rocking of the cab, the man continued his mission to get to the frightened driver. Once the windshield was broken the man climbed into the cab, now joining Ron in his precarious position high above the treacherous gorge.
The man pulled Ron out through the broken windshield to the safety of solid ground. Remarkably this driver, though shaken, did not sustain any injuries.
Shortly thereafter, Ron recounted his ordeal to a local news reporter on the scene.
When the reporter asked Ron who the man was, Ron said he didn't know. When the reporter asked for a description of the man, Ron stated that he was wearing a Carhart sweatshirt. (Yes, only a sweatshirt in a blinding snowstorm.)
When the reporter asked Ron Hall what happened to the man next, Ron simply stated, "He disappeared into the accident scene."
To this day no one has come forward to claim ownership of this heroic rescue.
Angels do walk among us.
